University of Ghana chess player Anthony Adjavon has emerged winner of the Kees Memorial Rapid Chess Tournament. The seven-round game saw Anthony clock up a total of 25.00, winning 6 rounds.
Anthony went past ex National champion Hashford John Kojo to clinch the title. Thompson Edward Nii Lamptey and vice president of the Ghana Chess Association Ameku Philip Elikem came in second and third positions respectively.
The Kees Memorial Rapid Chess Tournament was held on the 22 April 2017 and saw players among the top 20 troop to the Media Center of the Accra Sports Stadium to compete in the Swiss Format having 20 minutes each per round.
The tourney was held in honor of Dutchman Mr. Kees Hoogendjik who financially supported the activities of the Ghana Chess Association during his days. He was also a national chess player and represented Ghana at the World Chess Championship 2008 in Dresden, Germany.
He departed this life in 2009 and had the Kees Memorial Rapid Chess Tournament organized in his honor since 2013 making this year’s edition the fourth.
In an interview with Univers Sports, vice president of the Ghana Chess Association, Elikem Philip Ameku commended Anthony for prevailing in the competition “I believe Anthony did a great job, congrats to him and University of Ghana”
Anthony Adjavon is a 3rd year student of Actuarial Science residing in Alex Kwapong.
