President of the University of Ghana Students Representative Council Mr. Sylvester Amoako, has disclosed plans of embarking on a demonstration this Friday if the Physical Development and Municipal Service Directorate (PDMSD) does not respond to the calls for more transport services on campus.
“If we cannot get a response by Friday, we will go through due process and we would go for a peaceful demonstration. We will call our people, we will put them together and it will happen”.
The cries for more shuttles from students especially from the diaspora halls has persisted since the reopening of school to the extent that most students have grown impatient and blame the SRC for being incompetent and corrupt.
“Even students out there think I have taken bribe to redraw those buses. Students think that I have taken bribe possibly from RSTC which is not the case.” Mr. Amoako bemoaned.
However, the SRC in a bid to solve this issue brought in 3 new buses to reduce the plight of students but this initiative was not welcome by the PDMSD who called for an immediate shut down of the new transport system on campus.
The President maintained that he will not condone and support extortion from students through the empowerment of one transport system on campus.
“if the issue was that, we want to solve shuttling crisis from diaspora to JQB and all we seek to do is to empower just one private firm to that, then it looks like all we are doing is to encourage extortion which I strongly want to believe is not the case”.
Mr. Amoako insisted that the initiative by the SRC was in the interest of Management and not against them.
“Students don’t care about bureaucracies. Students don’t care about the fact that you have to go to head of security and PDMSD. You have to go to registrar. All the seek is results. It was in the interest of management that we put those three buses on the road to make things work.”
