The University of Ghana Security Unit has cautioned students and visitors of the institution to watch out for some criminal gangs operating in the university.
A letter from the Head of Security at the University of Ghana, Major Griba Adams Pabi (Rtd) to the Public Affairs Director stated urged students to be vigilant of a car snatching syndicate operating in the school.
The letter explained that the criminals were using two methods to operate in the university.
It stated that these criminals would “advertise online nice cars as sellers of them. They use multiple keys. They arrange to meet the interested buyers to try the vehicle. Negotiation is done with an interested person. They pretend to be lecturers hence busy at their departments, they direct interested buyers to pay to particular persons and location after doing the payment and returning to pick your vehicle another person has used another key to move the said vehicle away and the other members bolt away.”
The other method the letter indicated was by expressing interest in buying cars that were for sale and while test driving on campus, they speed off with the car without paying for it.
” Their other way of operation is that, if they see a nice car for sale one of them will call and say he is a lecturer and interested in buying the car. They will then direct you to the University of Ghana campus. They will request to try the vehicle, while driving and trying it they bolt away with the car. An arrest was made on 1″ September 2021 by Security on a similar issue the culprit and the vehicle were handed over to the Legon Police. The entire University community should be aware of such criminal gangs to avoid falling prey to such activities of criminals on campus.”
The University community has therefore been advised to be vigilant and watch their properties very carefully.
