Some aggrieved students of the University of Ghana have expressed their frustration over management new criteria for refunding both academic and residential fees for students under scholarship.
According to these students, the application for a refund earlier demanded a refund letter, a scholarship letter, and photocopies of a student’s ID, and also a summary of a student’s account.
But recently, the management of the university changed the previous requirements and is demanding a receipt from level 100 to level 400, in order to complete this process on time.
Speaking to UniversNews, some of the aggrieved students described this is as inconvenient for brilliant but needy students in the University.
“I submitted my refund letter about a month ago. They never told me anything. They took my letter and everything. Then, later on, I heard rumors that we are supposed to submit receipts and all that. So I managed to get someone or two receipts and I sent them to them. I was waiting one month later because they said the refund process takes about two months.
So I was hopeful that about a month later, I will get my money. It was later on when they called me to tell me that, I need to submit receipts from level 100 to level 400. And where am I going to get that from? So I had to go home and I managed to level 200 to 400. And they didn’t accept that because I don’t have the level 100 receipt,” one aggrieved student told UniversNews.
Further, engaging some of the aggrieved students, they petitioned the University of Ghana Student Representative Council, to as a matter of urgency, plead with management to adopt the previous criteria for a refund.
“For the past four years, UMPC has paid our fees. Because the money wasn’t given to us in level 100, we had to pay our own fees. So level 100 receipts, that one is assured. But the subsequent ones, the money has been deducted from the MIS web.
So there is no way, I have a receipt to show the finance directorate that I paid my fees. According to my bank statement, all the money was deducted from my MIS web. So if they are asking for a receipt from level 100 to level 400, before the process of my refund then I don’t really know how they are going to do that. So the SRC should please intervene on our behalf,” another aggrieved student said.
