The Mensah Sarbah Hall has won this year’s edition of the Inter-Hall Freshmen Debate Championship (IFDC18) organized by the University of Ghana Debate Society (UGDS) under the auspices of the University of Ghana Sports Directorate. This year’s week-long tournament which started on Friday [October 19] had 21 competing teams, drawn from the various halls of residence to battle it out for the ultimate glory in the various disciplines of public speaking, adjudication, and debating.
Although the tournament was mainly for freshmen, international students and continuing students who had never taken part in any tournament organized by the society participated.
The finale saw speeches delivered by the participants from various halls for the public speaking finale. Three judges were adjudged the best public speaking adjudicators and 3 speakers won medals for best public speakers for the tournament. In these categories, non-resident and the Alexander Kwapong hall won the best judge and best speaker respectively.
The finals of the debate tournament had three female teams, two teams from the Volta hall, one team from the international student’s hostel and one male team representing the Mensah Sarbah hall.
The tournament ended with Mensah Sarbah hall winning the trophy for the freshmen championship of the year. The team made up of Jibril Gazaf and Selassie Divine in excitement appreciated their trainers Lutfata Sungbawiera and Piesie Nana Yaw Safo for equipping them with the skills and knowledge in the debate which led them to come out tops.
The director of sports here at the University of Ghana sports directorate, Dr. Bella Bello Bitugi congratulated the students and urged them to keep up the good work to enable them to take part in subsequent tournaments;
“Congratulations to all of you for winning these medals for yourselves and for your halls. Keep up the good work and make sure you read well to gain more information to enable you to participate in the Ghana University Debate championship (GUDC), the Pan African University Debate championship (PAUDC) and the World University Debate championship (WAUDC) not forgetting other internal tournaments”

The tournament ended with performances from Negus the poet, Kwabs the saxophonist, Adevu, Eyram, and the entire UGDS team.
