The Human Resource Manager of the Ghana National Petroleum Company, Mr. Samuel Addoteye has emphasized the need for students to realize the need to take advantage of internship opportunities.
According to him, students in the various tertiary institutions fail to realize the importance of internships, hence overlook such opportunities when they present themselves. He intimated that being abreast with activities in the corporate world would enable students to gain the requisite skills for the job market.
With all the universities the whole idea is to get interns, people, to come and practically sit in organizations and understand what happens in the industry. Because we know that to bridge the gap is not just to “bridge the gap”. You pick a lot of theory and you come in there, you see real geologists at work and the idea is that when you finish that and you come back, you might then look at areas of specialization. You might even decide that you want to make a career switch because that is not the industry for you. So, we provide exposure to the students.
Mr. Addoteye further stated that the GNPC has its doors opened to receive students who are willing to intern with them, to give room for self-development for the corporate world.
I think most students don’t see the value of internships. They also don’t know the rules that operate in the working environment. They think they’re going to be students for life. So, we appreciate if at level 200, somebody comes to do an internship, comes in level 300, he’ll come in level 400 or even for national service then the person will be prepared. I mean when it comes to job search, the network that you build at that level opens doors for you.
Mr. Samuel Addoteye was speaking on the sidelines with Radio Univers during the career fair weeks of the Earth science department here at the University of Ghana.
