Member of Parliament for the Asawase Constituency, Muntaka Mubarak, has objected to the Electoral Commission’s insistence to use the Asokore Mamponghene’s Palace as a coalition center for the constituency.
The Electoral Commission has maintained that the venue is the best place for such a process.
But Muntaka Mubarak says that the EC’s choice is unsuitable for such a purpose.
He cites heavy vehicular traffic in the area especially in the evening and the bushy nature of the environment as grounds for which the EC must reconsider their choice.
“The place is obscured and at the outskirt of the city. It is surrounded by bushes that can be used as a hideout. There are a lot of uncompleted houses there that could also be used as a hideout. Everybody in this constituency knows that in the morning, the traffic is from Asokore Mampong towards town and in the evening, the traffic is from town towards Asokore Mampong,” he told the media.
Meanwhile, the Ashanti Regional Director of the EC, Benjamin Bannor Bio says the choice was carefully made taking into consideration security precautions.
“We chose a place that is convenient. Convenient to be used as a coalition center, is it accessible, is it spacious? because we are not in normal times. Is it spacious enough to ensure social distancing? These are some of the things we consider. And when we locate coalition centers, we give it to the police for them to also investigate and look around those centers as to whether they can provide effective security”, he said.
The Nuru Ameen Senior High School in the Asawase constituency was the coalition center for the 2016 election.
Mr. Bannor Bio however insists that the school is no more appropriate for the coalition.
“It is just a ground floor of a storey building with the hall not being spacious enough. It cannot contain 100 people and the chairs also close to each other. It has only one entry point which doubles as the exit point. The compound is littered with stones which can be weaponized”, he stated.
