Students of the Department of Teacher Education, College of Education, University of Ghana, have mounted a defense for their lecturer, Dr. Paul Kwame Butakor, who is alleged to be sexually harassing students of the University.
In a statement signed by the executive of the Education Students Association (EDSA), they described Dr. Butakor ‘as a man of integrity and truth, high standard and approachable by all and sundry.’
They add that the allegations against Dr. Butakor, who is the patron of the Association, is untrue.
Although the Association was quick to state that it does not support sexual harassment or any other related misconduct, it has pledged to stand solidly behind the lecturer who was captured in BBC African Eye’s ‘SexForGrades documentary.
In the documentary which was released on Monday, some lecturers of the University of Ghana and University of Lagos, Nigeria, were captured sexually harassing female students.
Another University of Ghana lecturer who was implicated in the video, aside Dr. Butakor, is Prof. Ransford Yaw Gyampo.
Although the two have denied any wrongdoing, they have been interdicted by the University and would be hauled before the University’s Anti-Sexual Harassment Committee to assist with internal investigation.
