After a long silence on their locked-up investments, aggrieved customers of the defunct gold-trading firm, Menzgold, have renewed calls for the government to ensure that they retrieve their monies.
The customers have lamented government’s seeming neglect of their sufferings since the collapse of the company.
In a virtual press conference held on Sunday, May 10, the group said that all efforts to get the government come to their aid on the matter have proven futile.
Their Public Relations Officer, Fred Forson, says that three of their members died on Saturday May 2, died because of the government’s failure in getting the Menzgold CEO, Nana Appiah Mensah, pay their locked-up investment.
“Here are aggrieved and hungry customers of Menzgold who have been neglected by their government for almost two years. The net effects of the continued avow neglect of the government and the insensitivity towards the plight of Menzgold customers was heavily felt on Saturday 2nd May 2020 when 3 of our customers passed on as a result of stroke and heart attacks. Anie Danso, Edward, and Richard Batsa died because NAM 1 and the government have turned deaf ears to the cry of Menzgold customers,” he said.
The customers are asking that the government considers paying them from the Consolidated Fund
“We demand that the cost of the locked up investment must be charged on the Consolidated fund just as is being done for customers of collapsed banks and other financial institutions. The characteristics of the customers of the two institutions and their investments are almost the same,” Fred Forson added.
The aggrieved customers further indicated that the government must take full responsibility of the matter as it “failed to compel Menzgold to pay customers as provided for in Act 929.
Following the reported deaths of three
Mr. Forson further revealed that three customers of Menzgold passed away on Saturday [May 2, 2020] bringing to 54, the number of aggrieved customers who have died. They therefore called on government to treat their grievances as a national emergency issue.
“At the latest counts 3 deaths have been recorded. It means 54 people have lost their lives because of the Menzgold saga as compared to 22 lives lost under COVID-19.The government must therefore treat the Menzgold issue as emergency national security issue.”
