The Political Science Students Association of the University of Ghana has held an orientation session for freshmen admitted into the department for the 2018/2019 Academic Year.
The short ceremony which was held at the Kofi Drah Conference room was graced by the Head of the Political Science Department, Dr. Maame Gyekye-Gyandoh, Level 100 course advisor Dr. Rosina Foli, representatives from Unilever as well as the United Bank of Africa (UBA) and a host of others.
Speaking at the orientation, Dr. Maaame Gyekye-Gyandoh congratulated and welcomed all freshmen to the department.
Delivering her speech, Dr. Gyekye-Gyandoh called on all freshmen to take advantage of the opportunities available at the department in a bid to facilitate their academic work and stay on campus.
She explained that though the department currently has only two female lecturers and eighteen male lecturers, there is a great collaboration among all lecturers to ensure the best delivery academic tuition and social treatment.
“…We have a pool of intellectuals, scholars in this department, two female lecturers and eighteen male lecturers. So there seem to be some gender imbalance, but that is just in terms of numbers, but in terms of our relationship, in terms of our commitment to working with you we are open to all of you. So, I urge you all to see your lecturers both as your professors you learn from but also people that you can go to and meet with if you have any problem”, she said.
Dr. Gyekye-Gyandoh further entreated students to fully partake in departmental activities such as joining the various committees that are available in the department.
She stressed that it is important for students to be fully engaged in the Political Science Student Association shortened as “POSSA” because it has helped many past students to gain several top appointments to serve at various positions in the country.
“…So, the department is very vibrant, it is important you take part in the affairs of the department. We have the political science student association also known as “POSSA”. I remember I served under the association. Another faculty member Dr. Aggrey Darko is now Chief Director of Parliamentary affairs, he was the POSSA president in my year”, she added
Despite quite a number of students saying they did not choose political science as a first choice, she maintained that there will be a change of mind after students start lectures.
According to her, political science is one of the most vivacious social sciences without limitations.
She added that the notion that studying political science automatically means you are a politician is also false since the study of political science opens a flood of opportunity for you in terms of gaining employment.
“… only about a quarter. I am here to allay your fears that with political science, you cannot go wrong. It is one of the vibrant social sciences and you will find and at the end of the day you will end up majoring in it….. this course can take you places, you can work in UN, any think-tank Organization, you can work in the banks, in fact anywhere”, Maame Gyekye-Gyandoh stress.
