The University of Ghana Medical Students Association (UGMSA) is pleading with University management to see to the completion and furnishing of the BQ hostel to make it conducive for usage.
The BQ hostel was closed for renovation a few years ago and has since not been opened for use. Although the association “is reliably informed that the timelines in the contract for the renovation of the hostel have been exceeded”
The petition was signed by over 400students and submitted to the Office of the Vice-Chancellor on Wednesday, October 6, 2021.
The association argues that school has resumed for the class of 2024(level 400), however, there is no space for the majority of the class in the various hostels. Forcing these individuals to find solace in private hostels with exorbitant prices and poor security systems.
“About 70% will have no choice other than being forced to find accommodation in the neighboring towns which is not safe. The situation is much worse when we realize most students without accommodation are ladies. Not only is safety not assured, the prices of the hostels off-campus are exorbitant placing a greater burden on parents.”
Another major concern highlighted in the petition was that even if the BQ hostel is opened for use the is no furniture to make it habitable.
“It has also come to the realization of the association that there are no beds, tables, and chairs in the rooms of the BQ hostel. This means should the renovation be completed today, students still can not have access to the place. With each passing day, the situation worsens and it is at the peril of students.”
In previous engagements with UniversNews, President of the University of Ghana Medical Students’ Association, Mr. Frank Ayugane disclosed that the facility has been under renovation over the past five years. He also indicated that even though, he alongside past Presidents including the Students Representative Council have drawn management’s attention to the delay in the completion of the facility, no tangible result has been achieved.
