The Former District Finance Officer for the Sefwi Akontombra in the Western North Region of Ghana and his successor the incumbent District Finance Officer of the same district James Essilfie have been arrested by the parliament police under the strict instructions of the chairperson of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), Hon. James Klutse Avedzi for telling lies under oath.
Hon. Klutse Avedzi had ordered the Parliamentary Protection Unit to arrest the two officers after they had presented nine payment vouchers which did not math with the documents that were served the members of the Public Accounts Committee.
The arrest by the committee follows a stern warning and cautioning by the chairman the Public Accounts Committee to Municipal Officers who would appear before the committee to desist from peddling falsehood under oaths as such actions would warrant an arrest and a prosecution in the court of law.
The officials of the Sefwi Akontombra District appeared before the committee last Wednesday to defend some queries on the use of the district assemblies common fund by the Auditor- General in 2015 and 2016, but the officials could not provide 62 payment vouchers to support purchases made by the assembly amounting to GHS 126,000. However, when the representatives appeared before the committee, they were able to provide only nine payment vouchers amounting to GHS 120,000 out of the 62 vouchers.
The chairman called for the arrest of the two after the committee after a thorough scrutinize of the vouchers presented them by the two officials realized their information did not tally with the documents provided the committee by the office of the Auditor-General.
According to the chairman, the arrest is to primarily prosecute the two for mismanaging public resources and also serve as a key deterrent for those who intend coming before the committee with lies.
