Minority Leader in Parliament, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu is calling for a review of vetting procedure for sector minister nominees.
He said that,“For the instances where a Regional Minister is “elevated” to another Ministry and appointed into the cabinet, the laws instituted are not clear whether such an appointee should be reviewed.”
He reiterated that it is for that reason the ministerial vetting procedure should be reviewed.
Hon. Haruna made these assertions in a parliamentary debate in his attempts to answer the question,
“Should reshuffled ministers be re-vetted?”
The Ministerial Reshuffle earlier this year by the President has generated a lot of controversies and debates in parliament as most members of Parliament do not see any need for these appointees to be re-vetted.
The Majority in Parliament argued that people presented to parliament to be vetted, if approved, are made ministers of state but not as ministers of their former portfolio and as such not mandatory that such appointees go through an entirely new vetting procedure for their new positions.
The Minority, however, maintained their position that the vetting procedure is reviewed and amended to make provisions for such situations.
