Ghanaian actor and aspiring Member of Parliament, John Dumelo, has boldly stated that marijuana popularly known in Ghana as Ganja, should be legalized in Ghana.
Speaking on the “Cooks and Braggarts show”, hosted by fellow actress Yvonne Okoro, the “John and John” star said he unflinchingly supports the legalization of marijuana because of its medicinal benefits.
Citing the case of Canada and the states of Florida and Colorado in the United States which have low crime rates, he explained that the misconceptions about the drug contributing to high crime rate and mental illness can be cleared if the right structures are instituted to regulate its usage.
“Yeah, I think Marijuana should be legalized because when you go to the western countries it’s been legalized for health purposes …… I mean, look, if alcohol is legal in Ghana and cigarettes are legal in Ghana, why not marijuana? That’s my point… so you have to put the right structures in place, I was in Canada recently and the day I was leaving they legalized marijuana ….. what Canada did was they legalized it before they started putting certain structures in place, so you can still do that, many people link marijuana to like “bodamfuor” and high crime rate and everything but if you look at places like Holland, if you look at places like Colorado, California and all those places, crime rates are low.”
Cannabis, also known as marijuana among other names, is a psychoactive drug from the Cannabis plant used for medical or recreational purposes. Cannabis can be used by smoking, vaporizing, within food, or as an extract.
So far about 26 countries around the world have either legalized or have lax laws concerning marijuana. It is the most commonly used illegal drug both in the world and the United States.
The countries with the highest use among adults as of 2018 are Zambia, the United States, Canada, and Nigeria.
